A scatter symbol is a slot symbol evaluated under a special counting rule. It may award money, start a bonus or do both. These are separate outcomes: a symbol count can qualify for a payout without reaching the bonus threshold. The word “Scatter” also does not mean the symbol must substitute for other symbols.
Scatter symbol payouts and bonus entry use separate rules
NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 2 overview gives a concrete example. It describes a payout at two Scatters, while three Scatters both pay and start the free-spins feature. The cash component and the feature entry should therefore be read as two rules, even though the same pictures cause them.
| Named example | Scatter award | Feature result |
|---|---|---|
| Dead or Alive 2: 2 Scatters | 2x the original bet | Does not meet the listed 3-Scatter entry threshold |
| Dead or Alive 2: 3 Scatters | 4x the original bet | Starts the described feature with 12 free spins |
At an illustrative $1 original bet, those two Scatter components would be $2 and $4 respectively. They are not automatically the final round totals: other qualifying awards may need to be included. Free spins increase the number of spins in the feature; their eventual cash awards are not known at the moment of entry.

The same count can mean something different during a bonus
Pink Elephants makes the stage distinction explicit. Its original rules require at least three Scatters for first bonus entry, but at least two for a retrigger inside the bonus. Filling a symbol meter is a third event: it transforms the associated symbol and adds one free spin.
| Situation | What the rule answers |
|---|---|
| Before the Pink Elephants bonus | Have 3+ Scatters met first entry? |
| During that bonus | Have 2+ Scatters met a retrigger? |
| A symbol meter completes | Which lasting symbol change and extra-spin credit apply? |
Read the count together with the active stage: the two-Scatter retrigger applies inside the Pink Elephants bonus, while first entry still needs three. The meter event is separate from either Scatter threshold and produces both a symbol change and an extra spin.
Scatter and Wild describe functions, not always different pictures
A Wild helps an eligible symbol combination by substitution. A Scatter is checked under its own counting condition. In the original Pink Elephants rules, the Wild does not substitute for the Scatter. That is an explicit restriction for this game, rather than a reason to invent the same restriction everywhere.
Jammin’ Jars illustrates a different arrangement: its jar is both a Wild and a Scatter. A participating jar can help a cluster award, while three or more jars anywhere can start Free Games. Having both functions does not mean that every Wild in every game can replace a Scatter.
“Anywhere” needs an actual rule behind it
In an anywhere-count condition, the eligible positions do not need to trace a normal winning line. That is different from saying every position is eligible in every slot. A game may specify a stage, symbol type or reel restriction. For Jammin’ Jars, the manufacturer explicitly uses an anywhere condition for the three-jar feature; this should not be generalized from the word Scatter alone.
Read one result as separate awards
- Identify the active stage: main game or an already-running feature.
- Count only the eligible triggering symbols, using that stage’s condition.
- Record any direct Scatter payout independently of feature entry.
- Record extra spins as a change to the spin balance, not as cash.
- Use the completed round return, minus its paid cost, when calculating net change. Do not add a running total to the awards already contained in it.
A trigger count does not reveal its probability
Two titles may both require three symbols while generating those symbols at different rates. A threshold tells you which result qualifies, not how often that result occurs. Likewise, RTP combines all modeled awards over extensive play; it is not a Scatter appearance rate or a prediction of the next bonus.
Use the studio directory when the same or similar game name makes its developer unclear. The examples above belong to their named games and documented stages; they are not a universal scatter paytable.
